TaleWeavers' Restoration Showcase

This Showcase highlights many of the chair restoration projects that we have completed.

Chair Seat Caning

Many chairs have been hand caned over the past 20 years.  The hallmark of a good hand caning job is under the seat rail.  A quality job will be neatly clipped and tightly wrapped.

Chair Refinishing & Chair Seat Caning

This set of oak spindle-back side chairs were refinished by hand.  Each spindle in the back and the front stretchers of the chair required time to brush and clean the wood.  A light matte-finish varnish was applied to the wood.  The seats were then hand caned.  These chairs were part of an office set, that included a drop-leaf desk and the two chairs.

Danish Cord - Dutch Chair Seat

The Danish Cord seat originates from Denmark, where these artisan chairs were produced.  Danish Cord is a paper cord that is used to create a variety of woven seat designs.  In some chairs the cord is looped around a nail or L-screw that is installed under the seat rails of the chair.  In this case, the weaving involved a looping technique that kept the weaving cord at the top edge of the seat rail.  The spacing along the rails was critical to the checkboard design of this seat.

Rush Seat Weaving

Wicker Restoration may involve the replacement of round reed or paper fiber rush.

Baby Rush Seat Pattern

This child's chair came with a partially woven seat.  We replicated the seat pattern using baby rush materials.

Danish Cord - Scandinavian Furniture

Danish cord seats are woven using L-shaped nails located under the seat rails.
